A little about me...
I am proud to say that I grew up in and graduated from Morgan Hill schools. I've taught upper grades in the district since 2003. I enjoy teaching because I can make such a positive difference in students' learning, helping them become more self-reliant. My favorite words to hear are "Now I get it!" When my students understand and learn, I succeed. The Upper Grades experience Upper elementary grades are a very important time for your child. The Common Core State Standards expect students to explain their thinking in writing, use higher processing skills, and transfer existing skills to new problems and situations. Students will have many resources to use and it takes them a little while to get familiar with them. Several pieces of homework will be given each weeknight (Mon-Thu) and due the next morning. On a rare occasion, a project may require work on the weekend. Late homework will not be accepted after Friday in the same week. Projects and classwork assignments will be accepted up to 2 days late with 5%-10% reduction in grade. Absent work can be turned in as follows: 1 day absent = 1 day to complete work 2 days absent = 2 days to complete work etc. Increasing student responsibility I do several things to help students become successful with increase responsibility:
Communication between home and school is critical to your child's success this year. I do my best to give you the information you need to track your child's progress and help him/her succeed. Please look for my classroom newsletter, details and grades for assignments on Aeries, and information on this web page. Talking with your child, reviewing homework and signing your child's planner each night are critical steps that will help them be organized and successful. Please let me know if your child is struggling at home with school work. A child will often display this at home when there are no signs in the classroom. Contacting Me I respect home and family time (yours and mine.) Therefore, you will rarely receive a phone call from me. I provide tools to monitor your child's grades and progress (during the time in-between progress reports and report cards. Aeries grading on-line, corrected work home, etc.) If you have any questions or concerns, I'm glad to help. Please e-mail me at [email protected] Though I often return messages more quickly, please allow up to 2 business days for a reply. If your need is more urgent, please leave a message at the school office at 408-201-6480 and they will get a message to me. Communication How will you know what is happening at school?
Common Core State Standards MHUSD has adopted the national Common Core State Standards. These national standards have been adopted by more than 40 of the states and will ensure that students will be taught cohesive high-level concepts across the nation. Click on the link above to view the current standards. Classroom Environment Respect - Mutual respect is required in my class. All students should feel emotionally safe to make mistakes and learn from them, take a risk in answering a question, and not be ridiculed or teased. No name calling is allowed in my classroom. Period. Even calling yourself a name is not allowed. I have a mailbox for students to "mail" me a note, giving students an opportunity to confidentially express concerns. Of course, they can also talk to me in person. If a child feels unsafe or has a concern, it is his/her responsibility to tell someone. Sometimes that someone is a parent. Please let me know if you or your child have any concerns. Wasted Time - I am firm about students staying on task while in the classroom. Studies show that teachers spend about 15 days per school year waiting for students to stop talking or in wasted time. With 182 days in a school year (multiplied by the 13 years we spend in school), that’s one whole school year wasted for each student during his/her academic career. Classroom Rules and Procedures
Effects of Positive Behavior Group table points earns the winning group a priviledge (varies) and first dismissal. PAT - Preferred Activity Time - The class earns PAT points for on-task activities and focus on lessons. Each point is worth one minute of a fun, academic activity on Friday. Consequences: A student receives one warning, then a 10 minute time-out inside the classroom. On the third incident, they have a more serious consequence (20-minute time-out, loss of recess time, etc.) Supplies: We can always use more of the following supplies:
Attendance: We move through concepts quickly this year due to the depth and number of Common Core State Standards that we are transitioning to this year. Absent students miss important teaching that cannot be made-up. It is crucial that students attend school whenever they are well enough. Please schedule appointments and vacations after the school day or during school breaks.
2 days absent - work is due 2 days after returning 3 days absent - work is due 3 days after returning
MHUSD Grading Scale Use AERIES to find current grades online Letter grades will be assigned based on standard percentages. Students will not receive D or F grades in elementary, but will receive an "N" for needs improvement if the grade received is below 70%. 97-100%= A+ 94-96% = A 90-93% = A- 87-89% = B+ 84-86% = B 80-83% = B- 77-79% = C+ 74-76% = C 70-73% = C- ≤ 69% = N e-How has directions on figuring out a percentage grade. Starting the Year
During the year, students will need some basic supplies and tools. Desks are surprisingly small when journals and textbooks are added. Any personal or individual supplies will need to stay in a student's backpack. To minimize the items needed to be kept in students' backpacks, we use group supplies for crayons, markers, glue, scissors and rulers. I have many of these already, but we can always use tissues, binder paper, and colored pencils. Donations will be very appreciated!
